The CPM provides a base-level product model that is: not tied to any vendor software; open; non-proprietary; expandable; independent of any one product development process; capable of capturing the engineering context that is most commonly shared in product development activities.
Product knowledge has been fairly studied and a number of modeling techniques have been developed.
Most of them are tailored to specific products or specific aspects of the design activities.
Alternatively, the process model can be derived directly from events' logs using process mining tools.
The business objective is often to increase process speed or reduce cycle time; to increase quality; or to reduce costs, such as labour, materials, scrap, or capital costs.
The model also provides the ability to update itself according to the captured actions of the knowledge users.
