Yet in 1945 its president, Margaret Hickey, announced, "The days of the old, selfish, strident feminism are over." Even the National Woman's party, the militant wing of the suffrage movement that had formulated the Equal Rights Amendment, employed the word feminism cautiously, generally restricting its usage en famille .
